How to Pick a Ring Without Your Fiancee

Picking the right diamond ring is a weighty decision at the best of times.

When you have to do it without your fiancée present, because you want to surprise her, it’s positively nerve-wracking.

So how do you get it right? How do you ensure that when she opens that gift box, she finds the exact diamond ring she’s always dreamed of?

If you’re lucky, she’s either dropped heavy hints about the ring she wants, or has left jewellery magazines open strategically, where you can find them.

Think about her personality. Is she shy, unassuming or outgoing?  And what would match this? Something classic, vintage or bling?

Ask family and friends. If you’re still not sure, you could ask her nearest and dearest – provided they can keep a secret! She may have confided in friends and relatives about the kind of ring she dreams about. And even if she hasn’t, they may have insights into her taste that will help you along. If you can find a friend that she regularly shops with or swaps clothes with, and get them to shop with you, so much the better.

Understand diamonds. The best way to ensure that your girlfriend is thrilled with the ring you get her, is to buy a diamond that is high quality. To do that, you need to understand what makes a diamond valuable, so that you can make an educated decision about whether the stones you are considering are worthwhile.

We suggest you start with our guide on the 4 C’s (carat, cut, clarity and colour), which determine the quality of a diamond. At Sterling Diamonds, we are happy to guide you through this process, showing you the difference between different types of diamonds, and helping you decide what qualities you are looking for in a gemstone.

The better armed you are with knowledge, the more confident you will feel about your choice – and the more likely you are to end up with a ring that is unique, bespoke and that your fiancée will love.

Don’t worry about size. A lot of prospective grooms worry that they’ll get the ring size wrong.

The secret is to get hold of a ring your fiancée regularly wears, and use that as a guide.

But don’t worry if you can’t, because the ring size can be adapted later. Here at Sterling Diamonds, we know how hard it is to get the size right first time so we can make a standard size with inserts. Once you’ve popped the question, we can have it measured to size, and will change the size for you for free.

Relax! It’s unlikely to happen. The good news is that in 30+ years of business, we have rarely seen a couple return a ring. Chances are that you’ll pick a beautiful diamond, and she’ll be thrilled.
